Implementing AI Design Strategy
Key Considerations for AI Design Implementation
November 21, 2024
Design strategy is like a treasure map for creating innovative solutions, guiding you to the most exciting and valuable discoveries. This is muti-displinary effort involving Stakeholders to invite: UX Designers, UX Researchers, Product Managers, Soware Engineers, and ML Developer. Here is an overview of the steps involved.
Design for the User
Analyse Customer Journey Pain points for AI
Apply AI Interaction design policies
Create UX requirements
Design for the User and not technology
First & Foremost, Design for the User by understanding their needs and pain points, and not for the technology or its capabilities. Talking to customers, looking through quantitative data, and observing emerging behaviors can shift your thinking from technology-first to people-first. Briefly, some of my important steps in the process are
Analyzing Quantitative Data from surveys, questionnaires, and platforms like Mix-Panel.
Gathering Qualitative Data through interviews and observational studies to understand user perspectives.
Developing an Empathy Map to visualize user emotions and perspectives.
Creating User Personas to build detailed customer profiles based on the gathered data.
Analyse Customer pain points for AI
While AI promises enhanced CUX, it's crucial to question its impact for the particular pain-point. Many experiences can be effectively addressed without AI. Before implementing AI, rigorously evaluate its necessity:
Does it meaningfully improve the user experience,
or Does it introduce unnecessary complexity?"
The frameworks that can be used to evaluate the options.

Apply Interaction design policies
Google’s People+AI initiative highlights four critical areas for consideration in designing an AI interaction:. This framework offers a valuable guide for designing effective AI interactions.

Create UX requirements and resource planning
Have a rich discussion with cross-functional stakeholders and translate the interaction design policies into actionable steps. This may look like changes to product ows or interactions in the user experience, or to the requirements of the AI systems in your product. Other steps may be privacy and security interventions, additional AI evaluations, or new data collection eos.
